Interestingly, we’re not all formally-trained chefs in the KptnCook team, but we all are passionate about good food, and have an unstoppable willingness to experiment. We believe in real cooking, for real people. Even when life gets busy you can always find 30 minutes to make time for yourself. Which means there’s plenty of time to put a delicious meal on the table.

For our first challenge, the KptnCook team in Berlin challenged the SF team to see what meal they could create out of sweet potato, orange and dates. Sweet potatoes and dates are both sweet, so putting them in a salad seemed like a good way to add some brightness and freshness. To get some protein and saltiness we opted for bacon and grabbed some dinosaur kale for a touch of bitterness to compliment the sweet flavors. The orange seemed like an outlier, but using its juice in the dressing, with a hint of garlic, cumin and olive oil made the whole difference.
Orange “dates” Potato in a crispy Salad
Serves 2 | Time: 30 minutes
1 sweet potato
1 bunch dinosaur kale
½ cup dates
3 slices bacon
¾ cup olive oil
¼ cup fresh squeezed orange juice
1 tbsp cumin
1 clove garlic
salt and pepper to taste
- Peel and cut the sweet potato into ¼ inch pieces.
- Chop dates into tiny pieces.
- Wash kale and tear into bite size pieces.
- Cook bacon to desired crispiness.
- Remove bacon and cook sweet potatoes in bacon grease for 10 minutes.
- Combine all ingredients and enjoy!
- Peel and chop garlic.
- Combine garlic, cumin and orange juice and whisk together until smooth. Add salt and pepper to taste.
